The American Red Cross remains on the ground in neighborhoods impacted by this week’s flooding across the Omaha metro area, helping residents take the first steps toward recovery.

For families dealing with flooded homes, damaged belongings and uncertainty about what comes next, recovery can feel overwhelming. Red Cross volunteers are working directly in some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods to make sure people know they are not facing that process alone.

Teams are going door-to-door, providing cleanup kits and emergency relief supplies to residents. Supplies include shovels, storage bins, trash bags, gloves and other items families can use as they begin the difficult work of cleaning up their homes.

At the same time, Red Cross volunteers have begun assessing damage to homes throughout affected neighborhoods. Those assessments will help provide a clearer picture of community needs and guide the Red Cross response as recovery continues.

As the response moves further into recovery, Red Cross caseworkers will work directly with affected residents to identify their individual needs, discuss next steps and connect them with available resources.

Shelter remains available

For residents unable to return home, the Red Cross shelter at Mockingbird Hills Community Center, 10242 Mockingbird Dr. (Omaha, NE 68127) remains open. Volunteers are available to welcome residents, provide a place to stay and meals, and help address other immediate needs.

Community resources available Sunday

On Sunday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Red Cross will join several community organizations at Karen Western Elementary School, 6224 H St., Omaha, NE 68117, to assist people impacted by the flooding.

Residents will be able to access resources, supplies, hands-on assistance and other services. The City of Omaha, Paul Davis Restoration, Lowe’s and The Salvation Army will also be on hand.

Need help?

Anyone affected by the flooding who needs assistance should call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
