Meet Rachel. She is part of the development team for our Red Cross region. As the grant coordinator, it is her job to explain the many ways we serve Nebraska and Iowa communities. Her work supports our multiple lines of service, providing her with the opportunity to collaborate with various chapters and departments.

Q: Could you explain what your title means and take us through your workday, or what projects you work on?

A: I am the grant coordinator for the Nebraska-Iowa Region. My responsibilities involve writing various grant applications and utilizing Red Cross data to illustrate how we serve the different chapters across our region.

Q: How long have you been with the Red Cross? Is this your first position with the Red Cross? If not, what was it?

A: I celebrated my second anniversary with the Red Cross on April 6th. This is my first position.

Q: What do you like about your work?

A: I appreciate working with the different departments and learning how our services impact local communities.

Q: What do you like to listen to during the workday? A: When I am pulling reports and planning, I usually listen to a mix of music from country and pop to Disney soundtracks. When I'm writing, I usually listen to classical music.

Q: In what part of the region are you located, and what do you enjoy about your community?

A: I live in Garner, Iowa, a small community in Northern Central Iowa. I enjoy the small-town Midwest atmosphere.

Q: How do you spend your time when you aren’t working?

A: When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, baking, crafting and spending as much time outside as I can.

Q: What has most surprised you while working for the Red Cross?

A: Everyone has heard of the Red Cross. However, until I worked here, I had no idea about the extent of the services we provide. Within the American Red Cross's five lines of service, we are able to positively impact a large number of people.

Q: What is a Red Cross moment that sticks with you?

A: I had the opportunity to attend the North Central division meetings in Washington, DC, at the American Red Cross National Headquarters building. Witnessing the history of the Red Cross and its tremendous impact, both locally and globally, was truly awe-inspiring.
