If Thunder Roars, Get Indoors

In the Midwest, we are all too accustomed to severe weather, so much so that we often forget that thunderstorms can be dangerous. Folks will finish mowing their lawns, continue grilling or sit and watch while a thunderstorm rolls in. However, no place outside is safe when thunderstorms are nearby.

Keep an Eye on Your Local Weather

Stay tuned to the local weather during storm season, including while traveling. Storm signs include darkening skies, increasing wind and lightning strikes. Remember that a storm watch means to prepare yourself and your household, and a storm warning means to take action.

If Thunder Roars, Go Indoors

When you hear the rumble of thunder, stop any outside work or activity, and get inside. Sheds, gazebos, dugouts and bleachers don’t protect from lightning or high winds. Avoid taking shelter under a tree as they are often hit by lightning, and you could be injured. Shelter inside a sturdy building and move to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Stay away from glass windows and doors.

Remember that lightning can be dangerous even inside. Avoid showering and running water, as lightning can travel through plumbing and water lines.

Being in a Vehicle is Safer Than Being Outside

If you have time and are able, drive to a sturdy building and wait out the storm inside until it is safe to return to the road. If you are driving and can’t get to a sturdy building, pull off the road and park in a place where falling trees and power lines won’t hit you.

They may seem fun to watch, but storms can be unpredictable and dangerous. The next time a storm rolls in, take action to stay safe. The free Red Cross Emergency App can help. It gives real-time alerts and provides shelter locations. You can also track weather alerts where your loved ones live throughout the country. The app provides expert preparedness advice in English and Spanish. You can find and download the app onto your mobile device.
