Ron Adams, a resident of Grand Island, Nebraska, has reached an extraordinary milestone in his lifetime of service—50+ years as a devoted volunteer for the American Red Cross. In 1973 “The Godfather” won Best Picture at the 45th Academy Awards, Secretariat sailed across the finish line at the Kentucky Derby, and many were humming along to “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” by Tony Orlando and Dawn. That same year, Ron Adams was encouraged by a colleague to consider community service opportunities. A nudge in 1973, augmented Adams’ banking career to a mission of unwavering commitment in his community. Since then, Adams has contributed over 10,000 hours as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

It all started with a simple suggestion from his boss, encouraging Adams to get more involved in the community. Adams embraced the opportunity to volunteer for the American Red Cross. Adams was willing to help where the need was greatest. Like many Red Cross volunteers his initial efforts occurred while he was successfully navigating his career, then later he was able to continue his volunteer efforts throughout his retirement years.
Adams’ volunteer efforts have been varied and impactful. His dedication to supporting the community has been evident in numerous ways, consistently providing guidance and a resolve to accomplish what is needed.
One of the most notable moments in his volunteer history occurred in the aftermath of the devastating tornado outbreak in 1980. On June 3, 1980, seven tornadoes in a supercell complex moved across Grand Island, Nebraska. While lasting only a few hours, the impact was daunting: five lives lost, over 100 people injured and 475 homes destroyed. As the community faced the harrowing aftermath of the natural disaster, Adams stepped in and played a key role in the Red Cross response. His efforts in aiding those affected by the tornadoes showcased his ability to respond with empathy and action. A Red Cross colleague describes Adams as someone who fills needs when he sees them.
Adams has also been a driving force in capital campaigns and fundraising efforts for the American Red Cross. His commitment to generating resources and support for the organization has been important and a key to his community involvement. Rachelle Lipker, Executive Director of the Red Cross Serving Central & Western Nebraska, speaks enthusiastically about Adams and the consistency of his efforts in the 10 years she has worked with him. Lipker describes him as “dedicated, classy and a leader.”

In 2024 the Nebraska-Iowa Red Cross recognized Adams with the Clara Barton Award. Most recently, Adams has focused his volunteer efforts in serving military members and veterans through the Red Cross Service to Armed Forces program. He drives individuals to the VA Medical Center and spends the day with them as they receive treatment for medical needs.
On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the VA Medical Center hosted a special luncheon to recognize Ron Adams. The luncheon was attended by friends, Red Cross staff and volunteers, as well as many from the Veterans community. Over lunch, memories were shared and the impact of a lifetime of volunteering was recognized. Roger Steele, Mayor of Grand Island, Nebraska, was very familiar with Adams’ volunteer commitment. He attended the luncheon and shared congratulations in his remarks.
Through tireless work and an unwavering belief in the mission of the Red Cross, Adams has helped ensure that the organization can continue to serve those in need.
This journey as a volunteer for the American Red Cross is a testament to the power of individual commitment and the profound impact one person can have on a community.
